Reichenbach named this species after Dr. Johann Klotzsch, Curator of the herbarium at Berlin from 1833-1860. (McCook, 1989).

Terrestrial, grass-like herb to 50 cm tall. Rhizomes stoloniferous, to 0.3 cm in diam, and to 7 cm long, often with persistent leaves. Roots wiry, to over 0.2 cm in diam. Leaves linear, 13-39 cm long, 0.8-1.2 cm wide, glabrous, wiry; margins revolute; apex minutely trifid. Inflorescence a spicate raceme, 22-53 cm tall, 2-4 (5) flowered. Peduncle brownish-red, flattened in cross-section, pilose to velutinous; multicellular hairs having a bulbous, glandular base. Floral bracts ovate, 1.8-2.1 cm long, 0.5-0.8 cm wide, shorter than ovary, pilose in bud and the base of mature bracts; apex minutely tri-lobed. Sterile lower bracts 2-4, linear-lanceolate, 2.5-4.5 cm long, 0.8-1.0 cm wide; margins revolute; apex minutely trifid. Flower yellow with reddish-brown markings, claw face white; outer surfaces mostly pilose; inner surfaces mostly glabrous; margins white. Dorsal sepal lanceolate-elliptic, 2.7-4.3 cm long, 0.7-1.1 cm wide, whitish-yellow with 7-11 red-brown nerves, glabrous inside, with glandular hairs basally; margins white, somewhat undulate, glabrous; apex minutely hooded, pubescent on outside. Synsepal ovate, 2.0-3.6 cm long, 1.9-2.2 cm wide, roughly equaling labellum, whitish-yellow with 9-11 red-brown nerves; margins whitish-yellow; apex minutely hooded. Labellum obovate, 2.2-3.8 cm long, 1.8-2.0 cm wide at widest point , yellow to pale green; labellar opening oval, entire; apical labellum rim glabrous, slightly emarginate in middle; apical labellum lining 0.4-0 . 5 cm deep; lateral labellum rim lacking nectarless spurs, edged with well-defined area of multicellular velutinous hairs; lateral labellum lining 0.4-0.5 cm wide; claw face white with green or reddish-green spots at interface with yellow; claw interior spotted , sparsely pilose. Petals linear, 5.5-9.8 cm long, 0.4-0.6 cm wide, white with reddish-purple veins, held almost parallel to 5º angle from labellum, twisting 1-3 turns, mostly glabrous within, becoming glandular-pubescent apically; basal hairs velutinous; margins only slightly undulate; apex minutely bilobed, oblique. Staminode triangular, lateral lobes falcate, 0.3-0.4 cm long, 0.6-0.9 cm wide, yellow-green, lateral lobes reddish-black; apex obtuse; basal margins and lateral lobes edged with dark purple multicellular hairs of 1 mm or less long. Column to 0.5 cm long, yellow-green, sparsely pubescent. Stigmatic area 0.4 cm wide. Ovary, including pedicel, 3.5-6.4 cm long, velutinous, brown. Capsule dark purple-brown, sparsely velutinous. Chromosome number unknown.
