A lithophytic herb with one or two growths. Leaves oblong-ligulate, rounded at apex, up to 30 cm long, 6.5 cm wide, ciliate towards base, green, mottled with darker green, flushed purple at base beneath. Inflorescence many-flowered, up to 1 m or more long; peduncle up to 35 cm long, often with a sterile bract in middle, purple, pubescent; rhachis with internodes 1–4.5 cm apart; bracts ellipticoblong, emarginate, up to 3 cm long, green, ciliate. Flowers appearing in succession, two at most open at a time, 8–9 cm across; dorsal sepal pale yellow with a bright green centre; petals green, flushed brown to reddish purple; lip purple with a yellow or green margin; staminode deep purple-brown with a green base and apex; pedicel and ovary up to 6 cm long, green, long-brown-pubescent. Dorsal sepal broadly ovate to obovate, obtuse, 2.5–3.2 cm long, 2.3–3 cm wide, ciliate, long-pubescent on outer surface. Synsepal ovate, truncate, 2.1–2.8 cm long, 1.5–1.7 cm wide, ciliate, long-pubescent on outer surface. Petals horizontal-reflexed, linear, obtuse or rounded, 3.2–4 cm long, 0.6–1.1 cm wide, shortly ciliate, twisted in apical half. Lip rather tapering to apex, 3–4 cm long, 2–2.5 cm wide, finely spotted on sidelobes. Staminode trullate, curved in apical half, 10 mm long, 7 mm wide. 2n = 32.
