A terrestrial or lithophytic herb. Leaves coriaceous, up to 9, ligulate, rounded at asymmetric apex, 20–50 cm long, 2–5.5 cm wide. V-shaped in cross-section, very thick in texture. Inflorescence erect, 2–5-flowered, up to 50 cm long; peduncle purple-pubescent; bracts elliptic, acute, pubescent, up to 5 cm long, 2 cm wide. Flowers rather variable in size, up to 8.5 cm across; sepals white, dorsal striped with maroon; petals white or yellow at base, maroon above with marginal dark maroon warts in basal half; lip and staminode yellow; pedicel and ovary 4.5–6.5 cm long, purple, pubescent. Dorsal sepal ovate, acute, 4–5 cm long, 2–2.5 cm wide. Synsepal similar to dorsal sepal, 3.1–5.3 cm long, 2–2.3 cm wide. Petals linear, tapering to apex, 6–17.5 cm long, 5–7 mm wide, ciliate. Lip small, rather ovoid in shape, 3.8–4.5 cm long, 1.4–1.9 cm wide. Staminode convex, rather cordate-subquadrate, emarginate, yellow, veined with green, purple-pubescent on sides. 2n = 26.
