A terrestrial or lithophytic herb up to 18 cm tall. Leaves 4–6, coriaceous, ligulate, obtuse, up to 23 cm long, 3.7 cm wide, green, paler green and slightly keeled on lower surface. Inflorescence erect, 1- or rarely 2-flowered, subtended by a white, papery, basal, sterile sheath; peduncle 11.5 cm, 4 mm in diameter, cream-coloured, velvety white-pilose; bract elliptic, acute, conduplicate, 2.8 cm long, 2 cm wide, white, papery. Flower very large for size of plant, 8.5–10.8 cm across, subcampanulate or spreading; sepals rather thick-textured, white; petals white, faintly flushed pink at base, similar in texture to petals; lip creamy with a pink flush around the rim, spotted with deep purple within, turning yellow with age; staminode bright yellow with reddish markings; pedicel and ovary 3 cm long, pale yellowish white, velvety-pilose. Dorsal sepal hooded, curving forward over lip, recurved on lateral margins, elliptic-ovate, obtuse, 4–5.1 cm long, 3.2–3.9 cm wide, pubescent on both surface, keeled on outer side. Synsepal elliptic-subcircular, obtuse, 3.5–4.6 cm long, 3.5–4.2 cm wide, pubescent on both surfaces, keeled on outer side. Petals incurved or spreading, broadly elliptic to subcircular, obtuse to rounded at apex, 4.5–5.4 cm long, 4–6 cm wide, finely pubescent on both sides, villose at base, lateral margins sometimes recurved. Lip subporrect, deeply urceolate, 3.5–5.2 cm long, 3 cm wide, flared at base, with apical margin incurved and grooved along veins. Column short. Staminode convex, trullate, truncate, 20 mm long, 10 mm wide, deeply longitudinally sulcate with groove dilating towards apex; stigma spathulate, very shortly papillose; anthers two, with dry pollen.
